Luxurious 60th birthday card

I made this card on special order for a lady at my LSS after she saw some of my cards. I took great pains to make it worthy of a lady who is turning 60. Oh, and the entire image is made out of a serviette!

I got the idea to use a serviette when I saw some cards in the Australian Cardmaking, Stamping and Papercraft magazine that used serviettes as very successful focal images. When I saw these beautiful flower serviettes at a small craft store, I knew what I would do with them! I only bought 4 at the time not knowing I’ll use them all at once (I only thought of layering them later), and when I went back for more the shop had closed down :(. So this is truly a “one of a kind” card.

I decoupaged 4 serviettes onto pieces of card stock (for strength), then cut one of them out to serve as the background, letting the flower “hang over the edge” of the border. For the rest I only used the flower part, which I cut into smaller pieces and layered using foam tape to create a 3D effect. I stuck some of the cardstock mats on mounting board for a bit of depth and strength. Finally I decorated the inside with beautiful paper and gold ribbon.

Pink and brown ‘Birthday Wish’

Pink and brown birthday cardPink and brown “Birthday Wish” card with large flower

Oh, I had so much fun making this one! I made it for my MIL‘s birthday, and I had the idea for it in my head for 4 days before I got a chance to make it.

cardConfession time: this is a biggie for me – I have never, NEVER used pink. Ever. I don’t even own any pink clothes and I even refuses to use a pink toothbrush! (If you wanna know why just ask me, the story is too long to bore you with it here.) Yet this card is one of my all time favourates, and I will be doing more of these in the future!! The only reason I ventured into enemy territory is because Heidi Swapp (among others) has been doing the most amazing things with pink, and this has slowly been eroding my aversion… it took a while (like, 6 years?) but I’ve taken this small step for man, which might just result in a giant leap for card-kind :-). Oh, and the brown designer paper by SEI has a silver sheen, which does not show in the photo, but is simply beautiful. I embossed the sentiment with copper embossing powder to match the paper.
